| Citizens Police Academy
|
The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Department of Public Safety and the City of Carbondale Police Department offers the Citizens Police Academy for those citizens who want to get a first-hand look at the work of a Police Officer.
The Academy is a 12-session, three-hour a week course, during which instructors from the SIUC Police Department, Carbondale Police Department, Southern Illinois Enforcement Group, and the Jackson County States Attorney Office present a wide variety of topics on law enforcement and the Criminal Justice System.

| The topics include: Firearms familiarization, patrol tactics, gangs, drug enforcement, special response team, K-9 patrol, criminal law, crime prevention, media relations, crime scene processing, investigations, and others.

| The Academy has graduated 27 classes since its inception with over a 400 graduates. Typical class size is approximately 20 students. The Academy is offered once a year normally beginning in September. |

Anyone interested in applying for the Academy must complete an application which involves a criminal background check. Applications can be obtained on line by clicking HERE or by calling the SIUC Police Crime Prevention Officer at 453-3771 (DPS1), ext. 274 or the Carbondale Police Community Resource Officer at 457-3200 ext. 428. |
| Or applications can be picked up or dropped off in person at the SIUC Police Department located at 705 S. Washington, Washington Square, Building A or Carbondale Police Department located at 610 E. College Street. All applicants must be at least 18 years or older. There is no cost for the class, and students do not have to live in the city to attend. |

First night of class is on the 3rd floor of the Carbondale Police Department, September 10th, beginning at 6:00 p.m. |
