Traffic Safety

  • Before you travel to a new location, make sure you have good directions from a reliable source. Wear your seat belt - it is Illinois State Law. Drive on major thoroughfares. Do not hitchhike or pick up hitchhikers.
  • Keep your windows and doors locked. Keep valuables out of sight.
  • Keep your car in gear while stopped at intersections and leave enough room between your vehicle and the one in front in case you must escape.
  • If you have car trouble, open your hood, and then remain inside your locked vehicle. When someone comes to help, only open your window a crack and ask him or her to call for assistance. Ask anyone in uniform for identification.
  • Carry extra change in your car for emergency phone calls.
  • If you get lost, stop in a well lit, safe place to ask for help.
  • Do not drink and drive.
  • If you have a cell phone, have it programmed to automatically dial 911.
